When He Vanished – TJ Brearton

A HEART-POUNDING THRILLER WITH A STUNNING TWIST

WHAT IF YOUR HUSBAND DISAPPEARED AND THE POLICE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT HAVE KILLED HIM?

Jane Gable returns from her shift at the hospital one night to find her two children asleep in bed and her husband gone, his phone and wallet left behind.

John has long been a responsible and dependable man, maintaining a predictable schedule. He is a former alcoholic, and so Jane fears he has relapsed and may be in trouble.

An ‘old friend’ of John’s, Bruce Barnes, turned up on their doorstep the day before his disappearance.

Jane’s son Russ had seen a mysterious blonde woman at the house.

An SUV keeps showing up. Jane feels watched and under threat.

Then John’s abandoned car is found with blood on the steering wheel and Jane fears the worst. And there is a revelation that will make her question her own sanity.

Jane desperately begins investigating on her own. Suspects include her ex-husband, her stepbrother, and the mysterious blonde.

Is she being framed? Can she even trust herself?

HOW FAR WILL SHE GO TO SAVE HER FAMILY?

Perfect for fans of Rachel Cain, Harlan Coben, or Julianne MacLean.

Author Interview

1. As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?

Taller.

I didn’t know, or didn’t really think about it. I made movies with my brother and sister (I wrote/directed; they acted.) When I applied to colleges, I searched for schools that offered film study, architecture, and oceanography. Once there, drinking and drug experimentation became my principal course of study.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’m not sure anyone “wants” to do this. You just do it or don’t. I always wrote from a young age. In my late twenties, frustrated with life, I became determined to complete a novel. Then I just kept going. Then it was about getting one published.

3. How long does it take you to write a book?

It varies. A few months to a few years. (I have to say, I prefer when it goes quickly.)

4. What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

That varies, too. I try to be workmanlike about it and sit down at the desk by nine or ten every morning, but sometimes the muse gets up to business later in the day, or at night. For a while I was writing first thing, before eating breakfast or anything else. That’s hard to do now with three kids getting out the door. (I refuse to wake up at 4 a.m.!)

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I have no idea. I probably do the same as anyone else: hunch over the desk alone, frequently frustrated and overwhelmed, occasionally getting up to do a little dance of victory, then back to hunching over the desk frustrated and overwhelmed.

6. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Could be anything. Sometimes it’s an idea; it takes the shape of a sentence. I was just thinking today that maybe writing a song is the same sort of thing. You get a little melody and you build on it.

7. What are you working on now?

Oh boy. Multiple ongoing projects. Avoiding writing takes up a good deal of time. Lately I’ve been going after half-done stories or old stories and seeing what I can get out of them. I’m in this phase where I really want to clear the air before I tackle the next story-from-scratch. You read that right: I’m procrastinating.

8. Is there anything else you think your readers would like to know about you or your writing?

Hmm. Not sure this is something I should share? I light candles and pray to Thoth.

No; okay… I guess every book has something in it I’m interested in, or want to convey. But it has to be palatable, exciting, engaging; that’s the story. But then within each story is this core idea or theme I’m playing with. That’s a lot of what drives me to write. Sometimes that core thing might be a character; other times it’s something to do with current events or man’s search for meaning. If I don’t have that core thing, it’s hard to stay motivated. So each of my books is part of some longer philosophical treatise, you might say, some version of myself going through life. Which I think — I hope — connects to you and some version of you going through it, too.

Author Bio

I started out wanting to make movies. My brother and sister were my first stars. After attending the New York Film Academy, I worked in showbiz for a little while and wrote my own screenplays. I always wrote prose fiction, too, and before I knew it, I had more books than movie gigs. Hey — Ridley Scott says writing novels and directing films are the “same thing”, and this way, I get to stay home.

I’ve had a lot of jobs. Construction, bartending, waiting tables — even weird things like cleaning tombstones and working for a non-profit. I’m fortunate to now write full time. And I’m lucky to have had my books hit the top 30 on Amazon Kindle US.

My fifteen novels are below. More coming soon. Thanks again, and please keep reading because without you I’m just a guy sitting alone in his basement...
